Between Curtain and Crescent
Home to some of the most stunning monuments in the Islamic world, Uzbekistan strikes an uneasy balance between religious devotion and totalitarianism, as disappearances and arrests persist, and fear weighs on its people. In Between Curtain and Crescent, photographer Yuri Kozyrev beautifully captures the religious fervour and the gentle pulse of the people, documenting daily life under an oppressive regime.

After the Earthquake
In After the Earthquake, photographer John Stanmeyer documents the loss and destruction that follows the richter scale 6.2 offshore earthquake that kills thousands and leaves an estimated 1.5 million people homeless in Central Java. For days after the earthquake, people search for belongings, mourn their dead, and struggle to pull together what’s left of their lives. Stanmeyer captures all this with compassion and empathy.

MediaStorm: Kingsley's Crossing
Kingsley is a 23-year-old lifeguard from the West African coastal town of Limbe, Cameroon. Though he longed to be a professional footballer, French soldiers trained him to become a lifeguard, and Kingsley soon found himself working at an upscale hotel giving swimming lessons to visiting Europeans. He earned just 50 euros a month, enough to pay for food and the rented two-room house he shared with his parents and seven siblings. So, in May of 2004, Kingsley left Cameroon on what he calls "his mission." What followed was an excruciating six-month journey across half of Africa. Kingsley's Crossing is the story of one man's willingness to abandon everything—his family, his country, and his friends—in the hopes of finding a better life abroad.

Atacama Stories
The Atacame Desert in northern Chile is the driest place on earth. Stretching 600 miles from Peru's southern border, there are parts where rainfall has never been recorded. But the Atacama is not without life. Home to more than a million people who find refuge in coastal cities, mining camps and oasis towns, there are vibrant communities, artisans, toughened workers and a devoted group of astronomers taking advantage of this unique environment. These are some of their stories.
