A Chinese Christmas
Hundreds of people attend Christmas Day Mass in the small Chinese city of Taian, Shandong Province. Today, government registered Christians are free to operate and worship, but they are kept under close observation. With ever growing, the Government’s role in sanctioning these religious freedoms will become ever more prevalent.

The State of The World
Reuters – The State of the World No century was more trumpeted, advertised analysed and anticipated then the twenty-first. Yet almost no one foresaw the dramatic developments that its opening years actually held in store. Now more than half a decade into what was new millennium, as a new century, what can we convey about the state of our world? Reuters – The State of the World is a book and web project that examines the first turbulent years of the new century. In this slideshow, picture editor Ayperi Karabuda Ecer reflects upon how contemporary news photography is edited and consumed. She discusses the changing value of news photography over time and asks how we remember the past.

Great Expectations: The Chinese Student
It’d be inaccurate to generalize that all Chinese students only care about studying, to please their parents. But because of the one-child-only policy instituted since the 1980s, today's Chinese youth are each expected to bear the great expectations of their families, to do well in school, and to be successful.

From Afghanistan
Five years ago, U.S. troops invaded Afghanistan to oust the Taliban in what would be the first battleground in the war on terror. Since then, thousands of troops have remained on the ground in Afghanistan and the United States has poured in billions of dollars to build democracy, increase security, and rebuild roads, bridges, schools and hospitals. Post-Dispatch reporter Phillip O'Connor traveled to Afghanistan in 2001 to chronicle the hardship and the hope of Afghans caught in the crossfire. On Oct. 5, O'Connor and Post-Dispatch photographer David Carson returned to Afghanistan to find out how U.S. efforts are progressing.

Madisonville: Heritage of the Heart
Folks in Madisonville call it “The Best Town on Earth,” a claim that might be challenged in some quarters. But after 200 years in existence, the city has earned some bragging rights. It’s a question not likely on the minds of commuters hustling to their jobs on this bright October morning. The leaves are turning now, aglow in the early light. Reds and yellows and electric oranges give the tree-lined streets a festive appeal. Over 200 years ago, settlers took root here and their families branched out to form a farm community called Madisonville. Not long after, a blacksmith found an outcrop of black stone. It was the birth of an industry that would dominate the region for more than 150 years. Coal is no longer king, but it is a tradition that will not be forgotten.

Baby Lance's Long Year
The Greatest Gift Of All Even before he was born, Stephanie and Eric Wittleder knew that their son, Lance, had a rare disease that would destroy his kidneys and threaten his life. Without a transplant the baby faced an uncertain future, but less than a month before his first birthday Lance received an extraordinary gift, a healthy, life-saving kidney, from his father. Late in July two teams of surgeons joined forces at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview in Minneapolis and worked for about five hours to successfully transplant the organ from father to son, thus giving Lance a chance to enjoy a happy, normal life.

Vukani means "Wake up!"
On April 27, 2004, South Africa marked the tenth anniversary of the end of Apartheid. Thabo Mbeki, Mandela’s successor, won re-election by promising to halve the persistent poverty through increased government spending. He pointed to millions who have received new cinder block houses and clean water as the major improvements by the African National Congress. In July 2003, Vukani squatter camp had no schools, no electricity, no stores, no parks and no houses of worship. It had four communal water taps and no flush toilets. Residents lived in shacks made from mud and sticks. Vukani is strikingly different now. The once verdant valley now has neat rows of brightly painted block houses. The residents have electricity, indoor plumbing and trash removal. They still live with disease and poverty. The story of Vukani now is the story of many such communities, coming to grips with a new beginning, but struggling with intractable social issues that bedevil the entire nation. This story chronicles Vukani's evolution in words and photos of its residents.

THE CARDSTACKER
For 30 days, professional card stacker Bryan Berg attempted to build the world's largest card structure at the State Fair of Texas (where everything truly is bigger). Dallas Morning News photographer Tom Fox, also known as "Timelapse Tom," mounted several cameras and set them to remotely photograph the progress every 20 minutes, 24/7. On "Demolition Day," he arrived with a third handheld camera and a photo editor in tow to assist with audio. The resulting timelapse is comprised of over 800 still images, produced in FinalCutPro and paired with interview and ambient audio. The slideshow captures the rise and fall of a card house version of Dallas' skyline.

The resulting intro and four audio slideshows convey some of the similarities and differences among the four campaign hopefuls, including their personalities and styles. Becoming Fu Yang's Dad
Early in 2006, staff photographer Louis DeLuca began talking to me about his adopted son Fu Yang and about how they had come to know each other. As he began to show me photographs he had shot over the course of 3 years with the love of a father and the skills of a seasoned photojournalist, I realized his words and the images told a fabulous story. Convincing Louis to write, in his own words, what his journey with Fu has meant to him, and to place his voice in the timeframe of the occasion, yielded captions of tremendous personal insight written more like a diary than journalism. Our features editors were happy to run the package on Father's Day, with a wonderful web photo gallery to accompany it.
