The State of The World
Looking Forward, Looking Back: Sorry can be the hardest word, not least for governments accused of past human rights abuses. However, the establishment of war crimes' courts and truth and reconciliation commissions, and the ever greater availability of information via the Internet, have made it easier to reach the truth and to provide redress. The world may appear to learn little from history, but in justice and remembrance lie hope for the future. 'Looking Forward, Looking Backward' examines the human custom to remember and mark the days, years and decades after an event. What do we remember about our collective past and how can we learn lessons for the future.

The State of the World
War & Conflict: No century was more trumpeted, advertised, analysed and anticipated before it began than the twenty-first. Yet almost no one foresaw the dramatic developments that its opening years actually held in store. The world may have avoided a nuclear holocaust in the last century, but its appetite for war in pursuit of resources, national rights and religious beliefs shows no sign of waning. “War & Conflict” presents aspects of how wars are fought today – on and off the battlefield.

Gregory Stewart and Stillman White never had a plan about their family. It started with one abandoned boy. A second child arrived in a cradle, while a third boy was desperate for a home. Then came another with a little brother in tow. The men who yearned to be parents became dads. And the children desperate for a family found one. Dogged by years of racial bigotry and sexual discrimination, the pair with their family of five adopted children of color moved to San Francisco – where Stewart is the new head at the city's Unitarian Universalist Church, the first openly gay senior minister of the predominately straight flock.

Between Curtain and Crescent
Home to some of the most stunning monuments in the Islamic world, Uzbekistan strikes an uneasy balance between religious devotion and totalitarianism, as disappearances and arrests persist, and fear weighs on its people. In Between Curtain and Crescent, photographer Yuri Kozyrev beautifully captures the religious fervour and the gentle pulse of the people, documenting daily life under an oppressive regime.

Buried Treasure
In Buried Treasure, photographer Carl De Keyzer documents the changes foreign mineral mining is effecting in impoverished Mongolia. Mining has created jobs and towns that people have gravitated towards, but is also changing the traditional nomadic way of life. Rapid changes in the country and cities simultaneously stimulate the economy and push the country towards modernity, and threaten the environment and the still fragile democracy. De Keyzer’s beautifully meditative images simultaneously capture the desolation of the desert and the emotional kinship of its residents.

Indonesia's Aftershock
An offshore earthquake measuring 6.2 on the richter scale had rocked the Indonesian city of Yogjakarta and its surrounding districts shortly after dawn. Hundreds of thousands of homes were flattened within a minute, burying sleeping families. Nearly 6000 people were killed with tens of thousands more injured and an estimated 1.5 million left homeless. Starting from the moment of impact, Jufri worked tirelessly. Over the next few days, he captured the destruction and loss during the days, and transmitted pictures through the nights. Through Jufri’s eyes, we see the horror, devastation, and grief, but we also see the heroism and perseverance of a community struggling to pull through.
